FAQ’s

Oral, Head & Neck Cancer

Tobacco and alcohol use are the strongest risk factors for oral cancer. All forms of tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco, put users at risk of cancer. Tobacco and alcohol are both risk factors by themselves, but the risks are even greater for people who use both. Other common factors include chronic injury due to sharp tooth or dentures , poor oral hygiene and human papilloma virus associated as well.

The most common symptom of oral cancer is pain, usually in the form of a non-healing sore which can appear white and/or red. A new lump in the neck that does not go away after several weeks can also be a sign of oral cancer.

Most head neck cancer specially oral cancer is usually first treated with surgery. Radiation and/or chemotherapy therapy are sometimes recommended after surgery depending on the exact nature of the cancer.

Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMF) is the surgical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the jaws, mouth, face and neck and its associated parts. OMF surgery is unique as it acts as the bridge between medicine and dentistry requiring training in dentistry, surgery, and general medicine.

OMF surgery has extensive applications such as treating head and neck cancers, facial pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, salivary gland diseases, facial disproportion, cysts and tumors of the jaws as well as many other problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections. Often the largest third molar also known as wisdom tooth gets impacted in the bone or gum tissue due to failure in eruption. This impacted tooth requires surgical intervention to reduce the risk of infection and pain. OMF surgery is the surgical technique used to relieve this impacted tooth. Your surgeon also places dental implants Sleep apnea is usually because of a poorly positioned jaw or excessive soft tissues in the vicinity of the airway opening. This condition causes a disturbance in your sleep as you stop breathing during your sleep repeatedly. But, you can sleep peacefully after the OMF surgery as it can correct the position of the jaw. A facial reconstructive surgery is often required to fix the damages that occur due to trauma and injuries. OMF surgery can correct the abnormality in the structure of the jaw which is seen in conditions such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. The inherited disorders of the upper and lower jaw can be treated with this surgery. Sometimes the upper and lower jaws may not develop at the same rate which may result in the differences between the appearance and function of both the jaws. Orthognathic surgery (a type of OMF surgeries) can help to improve the alignment of the jaw. OMF surgery is an excellent solution to treat the cysts and tumors in the facial and maxillary region.

Major Maxillofacial surgery is discomforting for 2-5 days post operative in most cases. A total recovery is expected in around a months time.

Oral Surgery

On the first day of your recovery, you will probably be too sleepy to do much, but most patients are back to their normal activities within 4-5 days. Usually the 2nd and 3rd day post-operatively there might be a spike in discomfort due to post-surgical swelling. Also, most post-operative discomfort is due to the lower wisdom teeth as they are the ones that accumulate most food debris due to gravity. The upper wisdom teeth recover more quickly.

Dental implants have a success rate of up to 98% and the procedure has been around for decades, with continual improvements and discoveries made all along the way. The risks are very low, and closely resemble those of other minor surgical procedures (infection, injury to adjacent teeth, etc.).

Dry socket is a temporary complication that arises when a blood clot becomes dislodged from the extraction site, exposing tissue. The condition can be painful, but luckily most cases can be avoided by following home-care instructions including the avoidance of straws and smoking.
